10 THINGS YOU KNOW AND DO IF YOU ATTEND PILATES

When we become captivated by a certain sport or exercise, it’s easy to become one of those people who preaches about it at every possible opportunity. Whether it’s running, spinning or yoga, we try to convert everyone we encounter. And Pilates is certainly no different! Regardless of how experienced we are, we will shout it’s benefits from the rooftops for all to hear. So, below we have listed a few things that you probably know and do if you take part in Pilates…

1. WHEN SOMEONE COMPLAINS ABOUT BACKACHE, YOU’RE STRAIGHT IN THERE!

‘Did I hear you say you’re suffering from backache? Have you considered the life changing experience that is, Pilates?’ Even if you weren’t part of the original conversation…

2. YOUR CORE IS ROCK SOLID

‘Have you seen my abs? Go on, touch them!’ Generally, people don’t want to. But they do, and you can enjoy their look of surprise and awe immediately afterwards!

3. RELAXATION POSITION RELIEVES ANXIETY

Feeling the unpleasant pang of stress or anxiety? You instinctively adopt the relaxation position and begin Pilates breathing.

It’s not ideal when you’re on a packed tube, but it gets the job done.

4. YOUR INSTRUCTOR KNOWS YOUR AILMENTS THAN YOUR GP

Week after week they hear about that time you strained your back putting the washing out!

5. IT’S THERAPY AND EXERCISE AT THE SAME TIME

Pilates allows you to get out of your head and focus on your body. Any bad thoughts or issues seem to fade and are no longer a problem as soon as you leave the session.

6. YOUR BODY MAKES CLICKING NOISES IN PLACES YOU DIDN’T KNOW EXISTED

It doesn’t hurt – so I guess it’s good for me. I didn’t realise my body was so musical.

7. THERE’S ALWAYS THAT ONE WOMAN WHO IS 20 YEARS OLDER AND 10 x MORE FLEXIBLE THAN YOU

Motivation? Definitely. Along with the lady who’s 6 months pregnant and is still more supple than you!

8. IT’S NOT YOGA – YOU WILL SWEAT

You go along to your first session thinking it’ll just be a slightly harder yoga class. How wrong you were. Pilates is challenging and will get your heart rate going!

9. YOU START NOTICING POSTURE – AND NOT JUST YOUR OWN

Pilates will improve your posture ten-fold. And once you understand it, you won’t be able to stop yourself judging people’s posture as they walk down the street.

10. YOU WILL MISS IT

As tough as it can be – there will be times when you are mid position and you’ll start fantasising about your sofa – if you miss a few sessions, you will miss it. Pilates is addictive.
